Mantaray

Mantaray is the musical collaboration of Japanese ambient-electronic composer, Susumu Yokota and New Zealand-born producer, DJ Ray. Meeting initially in 1992, the two worked together to produce soundscapes comprised of each artists’ trademark style. Yokota’s carefully-constructed orchestral sounds of nature were succinctly underpinned by Ray’s deep, pulsing rhythms. These seemingly disparate souls created something special as Mantaray that can never really be repeated. While DJ Ray is still active as a producer and sought-after performer for dance festivals and parties, sadly, Susumu Yokota passed away in March 2015. Nevertheless, the legacy of Mantaray lives on in their exquisite albums, which have become prized additions in record collections worldwide.
